Nonverbal Communication and Relational Messages: How to Build Your Professional Credibility Without Speaking a Word

Messaging produced through written and verbal communication in proposals and presentations creates an unprecedented need for understanding the way relational messaging can make or break us, regardless of what industry we work in.  Join us for a lunch program presentation on the role of effective nonverbal communication with UH Manoa Professor, R. Kelly Aune, who will share key points on how we can risk losing professional credibility without speaking a word... and what we can do to overcome that danger.

- Through nonverbal, behavioral cues, every conversation and interaction is subconsciously interpreted and stored, creating the “image” of an individual’s perception.

- Being more aware of relational messaging can help to mindfully manage the communicative process, making it easier to understand other peoples’ nonverbal responses.

Professor R. Kelly Aune has been with the Department of Communicology at UH Manoa for the past 30 years. He served as chair of the department for 10 of those years. Having has taught just about every class the department offers at both undergraduate and graduate levels, he can be found most frequently teaching Message Processing and Research Methods and Statistics. His research addresses how people understand each other so well, even when we rarely say things clearly.  He has published extensively on verbal and nonverbal communication, as well as deception.

AIA/CES LU:  This event is approved for 1.0 hour.
