SMPS Hawaii holds an event each month alternating between Lunch programs and casual Lunch+Learns. Our Lunch Programs are held at the Plaza Club and educational Lunch+Learns (bring your own lunch) are held at AIA Honolulu. We offer AIA Continuing Education credits for many of our events.

Talk Story Roundtable Style

SMPS Hawaii's popular "roundtable style” program is back!  We are featuring leaders from various education facilities who will give you a big picture of their organization and what changes and project opportunities are taking place right now.  Each industry leader will spend 10-12 minutes at each table, and you will have the opportunity to actively engage and ask questions to drive the discussion.

Industry leaders are: 

Dann Carlson, Assistant Superintendent, Office of School Facilities and Support Services
State of Hawai‘i, Department of Education

Dann Carlson was appointed on November 2014 to manage one of the largest areas in the HIDOE. The Office of School Facilities and Support Services (OSFSS) exercises technical staff oversight of business, construction, repair and maintenance of facilities, food services, heat abatement, and transportation support for the public school system.

Arnulfo Castillo, D.Arch, AIA, LEED AP, Director, Capital Program Management Department
Kamehameha Schools

At Kamehameha Schools, Arnulfo oversees the trusts’ Major Repairs and Capital Improvement Program portfolio which includes all three KS campuses, 31 preschools, Kawaiaha’o Plaza, Regional Offices and the Commercial Real Estate and Land Assets. Arnulfo is currently working on the completion of the Kapalama Campus long term Capital Action Plan in alignment with the org-wide Strategic Plan. The Capital Action plan will emphasize Hawaiian identity, 21st century learning pedagogy, sustainability and connectivity within the campus and beyond to the greater lähui.

Tim Cottrell, Ph.D., Head of School
‘Iolani Schools

Tim Cottrell, Ph.D., is a leader, entrepreneur, educator and visionary. As head of the ‘Iolani School, one of the top day schools in the nation, Cottrell has propelled the school into the 21st Century and helped strengthen academic programs. He led the creation of the iDepartment, recruited faculty to develop experiential education opportunities in STEM, and guided the school through the completion of the Sullivan Center—a 40,000 sq. ft. experiential educational space dedicated to teaching STEM, innovation, leadership, and communications.  

Sandy Hamura, Director of Campus Planning and Renewal
Mid-Pacific Institute

Sandy Hamura serves as Director of Campus Planning and Renewal at Mid-Pacific Institute. In this capacity, Sandy oversees projects in from the master planning and concept phase, through design and permit approvals and ultimately construction. A licensed civil engineer with experience working for both institutional and private sector firms, Sandy has a diverse mix of project experience including education, hospitality, recreation, medical and infrastructure development. 

Sam Moku, Vice President of University Relations
Hawai‘i Pacific University

Sam Moku is the Vice President of University Relations at Hawai‘i Pacific University. He is a member of the university’s executive team, reporting to its President John Gotanda. Moku joined HPU in March 2013 as the Director of Public and Governmental Relations and was promoted to his current role in October 2013. He is responsible for managing a comprehensive, professional university relations operation, including community and government relations, fundraising programs and services, marketing, and a robust alumni relations program.
